New Old-Stock Detroit Diesel Series 149 Parts: Inside Our Warehouse Inventory

By North American Diesel Services Int'l Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Florida

If you run a Detroit Diesel Series 149 — an 8V149 pushing a crew boat, a 12V149 in a tug or drill rig, or a 16V149 carrying prime power duty — you already know the hardest part of keeping one alive isn't the work. It's the parts.

The Series 149 went out of production more than two decades ago. Dealer shelves have emptied, supersession chains have gone cold, and a single seal ring can hold up an overhaul for weeks. We hear it from customers every month: "Nobody has the number. Nobody even knows what the number is."

We do. And we have it on the shelf.

Over 1,100 Part Numbers, New in the Box

At North American Diesel Services, we maintain one of the largest inventories of genuine new old-stock (NOS) Detroit Diesel Series 149 parts available anywhere — more than 1,100 distinct part numbers and over 30,000 individual pieces, boxed, unused, and organized by original factory part number.

These are not reproductions and not pulled cores. They are original-specification parts — the same metallurgy and tolerances the 149 was certified with — which matters on an engine family that routinely runs 20,000 hours between overhauls in marine, mining, and power-generation service.

Our stock spans the entire engine:

  • Cylinder kit components. Piston crowns in 16:1 and 17:1 compression variants, piston skirts, ring sets for both low- and high-sulfur fuel, liner seal rings, pin bolts, and pin bolt spacers — the heart of any in-frame or out-of-frame overhaul.
  • Engine bearings. Connecting rod bearings from standard through .030" undersize, main bearing hardware, cam bearings, and crankshaft thrust washers.
  • Cylinder head and valve train. Single-head overhaul gasket kits, injector tube kits, stainless cup plugs and fuse plugs, rocker arm assemblies, injector adjuster screws, bridge adjusting screws, and the jam nuts and small hardware that always seem to be missing when the head goes back together.
  • Fuel system. Sealastic connectors and Viton seal rings, fuel manifolds for 8V, 12V and 16V configurations, fittings, elbows, and fuel block components.
  • DDEC electronic controls. Mounting hardware, isolators, and retainer plates for DDEC-equipped 149s — parts that have become nearly impossible to source since electronic engines left production.
  • Structural and miscellaneous. Main bearing caps, camshaft caps, exhaust manifold sections and studs, blower drive bushings, and hundreds of the gaskets, washers, plugs, and specialty fasteners that stop a reassembly cold when they're not on hand.

Why We Hold This Inventory

North American Diesel Services has specialized in two-stroke Detroit Diesel and MTU engines since 2003. Our shop is led by a certified MTU and Detroit Diesel specialist, and we've built our reputation on keeping legacy engines running when the factory support network can't.

The Series 149 deserves that support. It's a square-bore workhorse — 5.75-inch bore, 5.75-inch stroke — that still earns its keep every day in tugboats, crew boats, mining haul trucks, drilling rigs, locomotives, and standby power plants across the Americas, the Caribbean, and beyond. The engines aren't wearing out. The parts supply is. We're closing that gap.

Alongside our 149 stock, we warehouse rebuilt MTU components — turbochargers, raw water and coolant pumps, expansion tanks, fuel injection pumps and injectors — for most MTU 183, 396, 2000, and 4000 series models, plus components for Detroit Diesel, MAN, and Volvo engines.

Series 149 Parts: Common Questions

Are Detroit Diesel Series 149 parts still available?

Yes. The Series 149 left production more than two decades ago and dealer stock has been exhausted, but we hold over 1,100 distinct new old-stock part numbers and more than 30,000 individual pieces for 8V149, 12V149 and 16V149 engines. "Discontinued by the factory" and "unavailable" are not the same thing.

What does new old-stock (NOS) mean for diesel parts?

New old-stock parts are original factory parts manufactured during the production run and never installed. They are not reproductions and not rebuilt cores, so they carry the same metallurgy and tolerances the engine was originally certified with — which is what keeps a 20,000-hour overhaul interval realistic.

What information do I need to order a Series 149 part?

The original factory part number is definitive; descriptions vary between catalogs and cause mis-ships. If you only have an old invoice or a page from a parts book, send that — we cross-reference superseded numbers in both directions. Have your engine serial number ready if fitment is in question, since the 149 was built in hundreds of option configurations.

Do you ship Series 149 parts internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Fort Lauderdale, Florida with full export documentation for marine, mining and power-generation customers. Volume pricing is available on multi-piece lines.

How to Order or Check Availability

Every inquiry gets a same-day answer during business hours.

  1. Have your part numbers ready. Numbers are definitive; descriptions vary between catalogs. If you only have an old invoice or a parts book page, send that — we cross-reference superseded numbers in both directions.
  2. Know your engine serial number if fitment is in question. The 149 was built in hundreds of option configurations, and the serial number settles which variant you have.
  3. Call or email. We confirm stock, quote, and ship worldwide from Fort Lauderdale with full export documentation for marine, mining, and power-generation customers. Volume pricing is available on multi-piece lines.
